The Challenge:Using the materials given, build a structure capable of holding as much weight as possible that is at least 1 1/2 inches tall

The Materials: 10 3inch x 5 inch note cards and 18 inches of Scotch Tape

This is a fun activity the students worked on this week. The challenge given to them was to come up with some sort of structure using 3x5 index cards and 18 inches of tape that would hold as much weight as possible. The cards could be cut, folded, torn, or whatever it took, as long as the finished structure was at least 1 1/2 inches tall. The exercise ties into the simple machinery that we have recently studied; students used the concepts of engineering design that we worked on earlier in the month (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve). The class was encouraged to think outside the box and come up with their most imaginative designs. Once a design was found that did pretty well at holding weight, many students took this design and expanded on it in their own ways to make the designs more capable of holding weight. The winning structure held an astounding 547 pounds of pressure before collapsing!
